about

A Certain Tide is my second album, gladly reissued by Pegdoll Records and now up on BC!

A note to the listener

This album began its journey as something very different; I was writing a single piece of music as transformations of a recurring theme. However, as I began writing the project changed to a collection of separate melodies which seemed to gather momentum and flow. I wanted to leave room in some of the pieces to be open to improvisation, and the musicians brought their own responses to these during the recording. They are magical moments and feel like treasure on the album to me. They are testimony to the skill of the players, who were more than able to follow arrangements and their own unwritten heart responses within the same piece. As A Certain Tide neared completion I was aware of its return to the initial idea of being one piece of music. To me, the album became like one song. I’ve heard it said that the rain doesn’t fall but gathers in the clouds until it becomes so heavy that gravity pulls it down. This is true to me in the creative process where fragments of uncertain melodies are drawn together like the confluence of streams; and the gathering momentum pulls the body of work into being.
Thanks for listening, Joel

Tiny Leaves UK

Tiny Leaves is the music of Joel Nathaniel Pike. He has developed his sound as a solo artist alongside years of writing and performing in bands. He describes his music as being rooted in narrative, but is often surprised at the undefinable end result. His music has a delicate, cinematic quality that brings a quiet hope. ... more
